Necktie materials

The majority of all ties are made from silk. Although silk is the most common fabric, ties worn for uniforms are often times made from another matrial: Microfiber. There are three differnt materials available:

Silk:

Silk fabric was first made by the Chinese over 6,000 years ago, and is one of the oldest fabrics known to man. Silk is a very fine and delicate fabric. Since the first neckties were used by the French in the 17th century, silk was the fabric of choice.

Silk ties give off an elegant shine and have a luxurious feel. The down-side of silk ties as a uniform tie is that the fabric is quite delicate. Silk ties are therefore most comonly choosen in cleaner enviroments. Common indutries that choose the silk farbic for their uniform ties are financial institutions as well as airlines.

Microfiber:

Microfiber is man made fabric that consists of polyester and polyamide. Thestrength of the mix of these to materials allows us to prodcue a microscopic thin yarn that is then woven into fabric. The use os such a thin yarn creates an exceptionlaly soft fabric with a great shine. Quality microfiber fabric is often times mistaken for silk. The benfits of microfiber as a uniform necktie are quite large:

  • Very stain resistant: Microfibers do not absorb stains. This makes the microfiber tie the most popular choice for restaurants, bars, and catering businesses.
  • Large variety of colors: Microfibner fabric takes on colors much better than silk which allows a much larger range of colors. If you need to have an exact pantone match for your business color, then microfiber ties are the best option.
  • Don’t wrinkle as easily
  • Lower cost: When compared to silk, microfiber ties cost about 30-40% less. At the same time they are expected to last longer and hold their shape better.

Polyester:

Polyester ties are the lowest cost necktie. They are just like microfiber very stain resistant and come in a very wide range of colors and designs. The low cost, and the stain-resitant advanteges make it a great service tie for waiters and bartenders. The quality and feel of the polyester tie does look more on the lower end however. If you need a stain resitant tie, but want to make this tie part of a daily uniform, microfiber is adviced. If you need a tie that is only worn for a single occasion, then the lower cost of the polyester necktie is a good selling point. Catering businesses often times choose the polyester tie for weddings. The goal here is to match a particular color theme. After the occasion the tie is usually not worn again.
