Matching Pocket Squares with Neckties

Most people associate pocket squares with formal attire of bow ties and tuxedo. Even though pocket squares are most commonly worn for black tie events, it is quite fashionable to wear pocket squares in combination with neckties. The type of pocket square as well as the pocket square fold you use for business attire is slightly different than the ones used for black tie events.

The pocket square

The white pocket square is the most formal color and should only be worn with a tuxedo in combination with a black bow tie. For business attire, wear a non-white and non-black pocket square. If you choose a solid color pocket square, make sure that the color goes with the necktie color. The colors don’t have to match, but should harmonize. Patterned pocket squares such as striped pocket squares, or classic paisley design Pocket Square are a great choice. Make sure that the colors of the pocket square go with your other pieces of clothing, and the size of the pattern should differ from the size of the pattern in tie, shirt, and suit.

The right pocket square fold:

Pick a less formal pocket square fold for business attire. One of the most preferred looks is the so-called “Puff” pocket square fold. This type of fold is elegant, and not too formal – simply perfect for business attire.
